About GivingTuesday

GivingTuesday is a global generosity movement unleashing the power of radical generosity. GivingTuesday was created in 2012 as a simple idea: a day that encourages people to do good. Since then, it has grown into a year-round global movement that inspires hundreds of millions of people to give, collaborate, and celebrate generosity.

What if we told you your GivingTuesday gift could shape history?

This GivingTuesday, help bring to life the first-of-its-kind Marine Spirit Monument on the West Coast—a tribute to the valor, sacrifice, and unbreakable spirit of every Marine. Your support ensures future recruits feel the pride, legacy, and valor of the Corps from the moment they step onto MCRD San Diego.

The Meaning and History of the Marine Spirit Monument

The iconic flag raising on Mount Suribachi during the Battle of Iwo Jima has become one of the most powerful symbols of the United States Marine Corps. Captured in Joe Rosenthal’s historic photograph, it represents extraordinary courage, unity, and sacrifice in the face of overwhelming odds. The image emerged from one of the costliest battles of World War II and quickly became a national emblem of hope, resilience, and the price of freedom. For Marines, it stands as a timeless reminder of the values—honor, courage, and commitment—that define their service. Preserving and honoring this history ensures that future generations understand the legacy they inherit and the sacrifices that built it.
